Edwardian Christmas and First World War soldiers homecoming re-enactment at Scruton Station

The beautifully-restored station at Scruton will once again be bedecked with festive garlands and period-style decorations for our very special celebration of Christmas. The fires will be lit and we’ll have festive music, mulled wine and mince pies, hot roasted chestnuts and traditional craft activities such as wreath making and Christmas stocking making to keep little hands busy.

From Wilfra Cakes to Soul Cakes – Ripon Museums continuing to bake with tradition

Ripon Museums are continuing to maintain tradition and heritage with All Hallow’s Eve at the Workhouse, by re-instating Soul Cakes, which were given out to ‘Soulers’, mostly children and the poor who went from door to door singing and saying prayers ‘for the souls of the givers and their friends’. The practice of giving and eating soul cakes is seen as the origin of today’s Trick or Treating.
