Landscapes in Colour Brighten Up City Visitor Experience

An exhibition of colourful landscape art at The Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds is brightening visitors experiences of the city this Spring with works by Liz Somerville on show until the 23rd June. Liz, who is based down in Dorset, has always loved printmaking and combines linocut and woodcut printmaking methods with painted blocks of colour to create her cheerful works of art. Visitors to the show have been delighted to marvel at these colourful works on display at the Leeds Craft Centre, now in its 36th year. Liz is often inspired when out walking and she often does most of it in winter; a perfect time to see a landscape with its bare bones, hard contours, un-obscured structures and un-adorned trees, plough and livestock tracks, oddly shaped fields, quirky colours, patterns and mark-making. Once back in the studio she draws what she has seen, using sketches, photos and memory. These drawings form the backbone to her linocuts, enabling her to really define her subject before refining and translating into a linocut. “These techniques are very much a means to an end; the overall effect is what I’m after, I’m no slave to convention.”
