September reasons to visit Ripon Museums

Ripon Museums have planned an early autumn season of events that present perfect reasons to visit all three of Ripon Museums; the Workhouse & Garden; the Prison & Police Museum and the Courthouse. Our main exhibition at the Workhouse, on loan from the prestigious Horniman Museum, will be Rainforest of the Sea. Running from 7th September to 2nd December, this stunning photography exhibition will show the wonders of the Borneo coral triangle. Come along for close encounters with a longhorn cowfish, a bumblebee shrimp and a hairy squat lobster… National Heritage Week opens up Museums to visitors free of charge and gives us an opportunity to put on some fun events. So come along on 8th September for guided tours of the Workhouse Museum and try your hand at baking the very traditional Wilfra Cakes. It’s not always fun in the workhouse though – and on 29th September it’s actually MURDER! A murderer lurks in the workhouse corridors – and it’s up to you to solve the mystery! Tickets are £25 and include a 3-course meal, a drink and 1920s props. We’re asking you to be the Judge at our interactive sentencing event at the Regency Courthouse Museum on 4th October. We’ll describe the crime and you decide the sentence. Tickets are £8 and include wine and cheese. All our events are on www.riponmuseums.co.uk/events.

World's largest Yorkshire flag unveiled at Scarborough Cricket Festival

Welcome to Yorkshire have unveiled the world’s largest Yorkshire flag to celebrate the start of the 132nd Welcome to Yorkshire Scarborough Cricket Festival. The giant flag measuring 50 metres squared was waved by children from The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation’s Beach Cricket Tournament as Yorkshire’s players walked out on the pitch for their County Championship Division One clash with Worcestershire. A mammoth Welcome to Yorkshire banner was also unfurled (the same size as the Yorkshire flag), and children made a guard of honour by waving hand flags and pom-poms as the teams took their positions.
