Tuesday 15 February - Rebuilding Britain’s Tourism Industry

Kurt discussed how tourism and hospitality can bounce back from the impact of the pandemic.

After graduating with a 1st Class Masters in Public Policy, Kurt was employed by the Department of Conservation and then the New Zealand Tourist Board, working national and regional tourism strategy. He moving to Britain in 1997 to work for VisitBritain as Head of Strategic Planning with responsibility for Policy, Strategy, Business Planning and Marketing Evaluation. 

Kurt left VisitBritain in 2004 to become the Director of the Tourism Alliance, an umbrella trade association for the tourism and hospitality sector that comprises over 65 industry associations that together represent almost 200,000 UK businesses. The core role of the Tourism Alliance is to lobby Government on issues that support the development of the UK tourism industry. He is a member of several Government advisory groups including the Tourism Industry Council and HMRC’s SMEOF, has written VisitEngland’s “Pink Book” on accommodation legislation since 1999.

He is a Fellow of the Tourism Management Institute and the Association of Tourism in Higher Education.

Welcome to Walkshire: How you can get involved - Tuesday 26 January, 12pm - 1pm 

On 1st January 2021, Welcome to Yorkshire launched Walkshire, a campaign to underpin the county as the walking capital of the UK. A year long campaign to support the tourism economy throughout all seasons whilst mindful of the restrictions Covid-19 may still impose.

This webinar demonstrated the micro and macro economic impact of the campaign and how businesses of any size can participate from as little as £50 all the way up to partnership packages for brands wanting regional, national and international exposure.

Monday 29th June (10am - 11.30am) - Supporting our Attractions as the Yorkshire hospitality industry reopens, rebuilds and starts to recover

Next in the series of Welcome to Yorkshire recovery webinars we heard from key attractions about their experiences and challenges of COVID-19 so far. Cheryl Williams, Director and Trustee of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, and Abbi Ollive, Head of Marketing and Sales at Castle Howard, revealed how attractions have been impacted by the pandemic, best practice being implemented to help create a safe environment, and their expectations for the months ahead. Bernard Donoghue, Director of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) also be joined the conversation to give his insight into the future of the sector and what the impact of COVID-19 will be.
