Welcome to Yorkshire Statement regarding HS2
Welcome to Yorkshire has responded to the publication of the Government’s Integrated Rail Plan which confirms the cancellation of the Eastern leg of HS2 but promises a reduction in travel times and an increase in capacity on lines serving Yorkshire.
A spokesperson said:
“The visitor economy depends on ease of access for tourists, commuters and local residents with regular and efficient rail services crucially important.
“Yorkshire has been disadvantaged in comparison with some parts of the country and improvements to the transport infrastructure are long overdue.
“It is therefore important to acknowledge that the Integrated Rail Plan represents a significant investment in modernising the rail network.
“Improvements to the East Coast Mainline and the full electrification of the Transpennine Main Line between York and Manchester and the Midland Main Line from London to Sheffield are good news, together with the commitment to finally develop a mass transit system for Leeds and West Yorkshire.
“Welcome to Yorkshire will study the Plan in detail – including the benefits it may bring for sustainability - and looks forward to working with central government, Yorkshire local authorities, the business community and other partners to continue making the positive case for our region.”
