As Yorkshire’s tourism businesses emerge from the pandemic and robustly rebuild, Welcome to Yorkshire’s year-long annual campaigns, Walkshire in 2021 and this year’s Yorkshire Menu, have brought the county together to promote all that’s great about Yorkshire. From breathtaking countryside to vibrant cities, picturesque coast to bustling towns, world-class heritage locations, amazing arts, fabulous food and drink, there’s much to showcase to the world.

Walkshire Campaign

Walkshire was launched on New Year’s Day 2021, with a walk for each day of the year in  every corner of the county. It had international celebrity endorsement from TV’s Dr Amir Khan and multi-award-winning Paralympian Hannah Cockroft MBE, DL, who shared their favourite walks on film (Bramhope to Harrogate, and Scarborough seafront respectively).

The Tour de Walkshire was a walking challenge throughout the month of May, with mass participation. Walkers enjoyed the Yorkshire great outdoors and raised almost £125k for Welcome to Yorkshire’s official charity partner Yorkshire Cancer Research, smashing its £50,000 fundraising target in the first five days. Support came from across the world, including Yorkshire’s award-winning actor Sir Patrick Stewart tweeting from LA to his 3.6m followers “This fundraiser will make my beloved Yorkshire even lovelier.” Sport stars, including triathlete Alistair Brownlee MBE and cricketer Ryan Sidebottom got involved, plus media personalities Natalie Anderson, Christine Talbot and Rich Williams amongst others. Fantastic fundraisers also signed up from across the world, in California and Iowa in the US, as well as Austria, Germany and London, all with a love of Yorkshire. 

Welcome to Yorkshire’s #Walkshire initiative captured the imagination of many people across the county, the nation and the world in the most inclusive of campaigns, enjoyed by all ages and abilities, with wonderful well-being and health benefits.

Following the success of last year’s Walkshire, Welcome to Yorkshire launched their year-long Yorkshire Menu on New Year’s Day 2022, celebrating Yorkshire’s food and drink. From street food to Michelin-starred restaurants, farm shops to tea rooms, vineyards to distilleries, local produce to international cuisine, market stalls to delicatessens … and so much more, there’s also Yorkshire on Tour, Eat Around the World (whilst staying in the county), mouth-watering recipes, food and drink trails, and a calendar of competitions and creative campaigns.

Yorkshire Menu features celebrated chefs, food and drink experts, the magnificent teams of people who create the delectable delights the county is famous for, plus a whole host of celebrities, including interviews for Welcome to Yorkshire’s Talkshire podcast. From fantastic fishing crews to fabulous farmers, restaurant owners to world-renowned cooks and drinks producers, it’s a top year for tucker, tipples and brilliant beverages.

Pre-pandemic Welcome to Yorkshire’s global brand reach was over 23m and had a social reach of almost 20m, with tourism in Yorkshire being worth £9 billion annually and employing almost 225,000 people. Continued campaigns are vital to attract visitors from far and wide to our beautiful county of Yorkshire and incredibly important for the survival, support and growth of the region’s tourism industry.”
