Welcome to Yorkshire Board Meeting Update

Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of Welcome to Yorkshire and to update you on the latest news from the organisation following the board meeting on Thursday 21st October 2021.

I can confirm that the Welcome to Yorkshire Board has received letters of resignation from:

  • Abbi Ollive
  • Nicky Chance-Thompson DL
  • Richard Flint
  • Sarah Tahamtani

On behalf of the board I would like to thank each of them for their contribution to Welcome to Yorkshire since joining and wish them well for the future.

Following his resignation, James Mason stands down as chief executive and office holder on Friday 22nd October. On behalf of board members past and present l would like to thank James for the commitment and energy he has demonstrated during a particularly tricky time for tourism and for the organisation. We wish James and his family well for the future.

Going forward, I can confirm that members of the Welcome to Yorkshire Board are unanimous in saying that there is a need for a Yorkshire-wide DMO and that the recent ‘de Bois Review, an independent review of Destination Management Organisations in England’ from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, is therefore welcome.

This review confirms that DMOs will in future have a far more strategic role in driving the economic performance of the sector. There will be a need for DMOs to work with the Government on issues such as climate change and the Government’s levelling up agenda.

The Welcome to Yorkshire Board believe it’s both timely and appropriate to undertake a wide consultation with local authority leaders, mayors, stakeholders and other representatives from the tourism sector on how new objectives for Welcome to Yorkshire will be met. It’s the board’s intention that the consultation should start quickly and be completed as soon as possible.

The Welcome to Yorkshire Board has agreed that the AGM (annual general meeting) be postponed until the consultation has been completed and I have agreed, at the request of the board, to remain as Chair until then. I will then step down from the role at the AGM, having completed the tasks asked of me by local government. The date of the AGM will be announced, once the date for completion of the consultation is known.

On behalf of the board I can confirm that interim arrangements regarding the organisation’s leadership will be dealt with expeditiously. Any interim appointment will also include board membership.

Welcome to Yorkshire’s next board meeting is currently scheduled for Thursday 18th November at 3:30pm and an agenda will be available seven days before.

Further updates will be shared, but in the meantime, the Welcome to Yorkshire team are enthusiastically committed to working on current projects, with many exciting initiatives in the pipeline.

Kind regards

Peter Box CBE
