Welcome to Yorkshire has appointed Liz Smailes as a new Area Manager, as it continues to expand on development plans across the county.

Liz Smailes joins us having worked in the arts, hospitality, travel and tourism for over 25 years across Europe, Asia and the UK, bringing her expertise in marketing, branding and business development, as well as Hotel Management and sustainable tourism. Having worked with DMOs around the world, her extensive insight into the international tourism scene will be a strong addition our team. Fun fact, Liz’s grandfather, Frank Smailes, was a first-class Yorkshire and England Test cricketer 1932- 48, and retired sporting life to own The Sportsman’s Arms in Wath for ca. 20 years.

We’re delighted to welcome Liz to the team as she is the perfect fit to offer both her industry expertise, from many years working within international tourism, but also her in-depth local knowledge of Yorkshire.” said James Mason, CEO of Welcome to Yorkshire.

As a hospitality business owner herself Liz has been able to offer critical insight over the last twelve months, with regards to how and what accommodation providers have had to deal with and how Welcome to Yorkshire can best serve this vital industry. Her knowledge of international trends and contacts across the world will enable us to be ahead of the curve when the global aviation markets reopen fully. We’re lucky to have her!

Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK and home to seven major cities, a stunning coastline, world-class dining, arts, heritage and educational facilities, while also offering a desirable lifestyle combining countryside, coastal and urban experiences within close proximity.

I’m excited to join Welcome to Yorkshire as the industry emerges from a turbulent 18 months,” said Liz. “Travel & tourism is a wonderful industry to work in and plays a critical role across the globe. For many communities in Yorkshire it is the backbone of family run businesses that have been left devastated, and Yorkshire’s hospitality and tourism sector on the whole has shown admirable resilience and innovation to open safely and securely. I’m really looking forward to working with the team and collectively deliver on an ambitious agenda to achieve long-term sustainable and inclusive growth across the county.
