Prominent Tourism Champion to Head Welcome to Yorkshire Review

John Gallery, owner and manager of York-based Great Potential, will lead an internal review on the future direction of Welcome to Yorkshire.

Mr Gallery, who joined the organisation’s board as a non-executive director in November 2021, will prepare a report for consideration by the Welcome to Yorkshire Board that will be shared with the Yorkshire Leaders Board in February.

A long-standing member of Welcome to Yorkshire’s Private Sector Members Group, he has vast experience in the Yorkshire tourism sector including the role of Research Group Lead for the Business Visits and Events Partnership, working with independent hotels and venues, and offering strategic marketing, management consultancy services and leadership advice to a range of clients.

A past chairman of Visit York and current chairman of the Herriot Country Tourism Group, Mr Gallery has been heavily involved in the development of the World of James Herriot in Thirsk and joined its board as marketing director in January 2021.

Peter Box CBE, Welcome to Yorkshire chair, said: “John has a wealth of knowledge gained over many years in the region’s tourism and hospitality sectors and is the ideal choice to take this review forward.

“He was recruited to the board with a specific brief to engage with the private sector. His already well-established links with Yorkshire businesses will be particularly useful given the swift time frame.

“As a Welcome to Yorkshire board member, it will be carried out at no cost to the organisation.

“I am grateful to John for stepping up and know he will do a fantastic job.”

John Gallery said: “I am delighted to take on the task of bringing forward ideas for an exciting new direction for Welcome to Yorkshire.

“As well as evaluating relevant recent research on the region’s tourism industry, I will be engaging directly with Welcome to Yorkshire’s key partners and stakeholders. I would also encourage other interested parties - including members of the public - to send written submissions, all of which I will read personally.

“This review will complement a separate review process, on behalf of the Yorkshire Leaders, which is already underway.

“Working together, I am confident we can create an innovative and ambitious new road map for Yorkshire tourism which will deliver tangible benefits to the region as a whole after an incredibly challenging period for everyone.”

Organisations or individuals wishing to make a written submission to the review can do so by emailing review@yorkshire.com by Friday 28th January.
