77 Green Flag Awards for Parks and Canals in Yorkshire
In October this year a total of 2,127 green spaces in the UK received the Green Flag status, 77 of these coveted titles are in Yorkshire, a recognition that shows Yorkshire has more parks with the Green Flag Status than the whole of Scotland and North East of England.
The prestigious award of Green Flag Status sets the bar for the management of recreational outdoor areas across the UK and all over the world. Research for Keep Britain Tidy found having access to a quality park or green space helped improve people’s mental health with 59% saying they felt less stressed when using the park and 55% saying they felt more positive in general.
This tremendous result endorses Yorkshire as a destination not only to visit, but also to work, live and study. In North Yorkshire, the University of York Campus Heslington West & Heslington East are on the list as well as Rowntree Park in York and Falsgrave Park in Scarborough.
In East Yorkshire, Pearson Park and East Park in Hull received the coveted award. In South Yorkshire, The Botanical Gardens and Ecclesall Woods in Sheffield have been given a Green Flag award. As have Elsecar Park and Local Reservoir Nature Reserve in Barnsley, Cusworth Park and Sandall Park in Doncaster, and Clifton Park in Rotherham. In West Yorkshire, Golden Acre Park and Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds have been acknowledged with a Green Flag award, plus Beaumont Park in Huddersfield and Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield.
Established 25 years ago, the Green Flag Award scheme highlights and rewards the most well maintained parks and green spaces.
The incentive behind the scheme is:
- To make sure everyone has access to cared for green and other open spaces, no matter where they live.
- To make sure that these spaces are taken care of, managed and meet the needs of the communities they serve.
- To achieve standards of good management.
- To encourage and highlight good practice amongst the green space sector.
- To reward the hard work of managers, staff and volunteers of these green spaces and parks.
To celebrate our fantastic parks the public is being asked to vote for their favourite award-winning park in the UK. With 77 locations in Yorkshire to choose from, we are spoilt for choice but to vote for your favourite, simply find it on the winners’ map link below and click the vote button.
Voting is now open and closes on 14th November 2021, with the top ten winning sites announced at a virtual awards ceremony on the 23rd November 2021.
