What is Accessible Tourism?
‘Accessible Tourism’ or ‘Inclusive Tourism’ describes day visits or overnight trips taken by a person with an impairment or by groups in which one member has an impairment.
The spending power of disabled visitors is also known as the Purple Pound.
Latest figures from VisitEngland / VisitBritain show that the value of this market to the British tourism industry is £15.3 billion.
Research by the national tourism body also found that disabled visitors stay longer and spend more
on average than other visitors.
As well as being a large, lucrative and growing market there is also considerable untapped potential for the market to grow further.
430,000 adults with an impairment did not take a trip in the last 12 months due to a lack of accessibiltiy provision. If each of these people took a domestic holiday, it would generate an additional £116.7 million.
The value of welcoming disabled visitors speaks for itself but we know that businesses are often unsure how to do this well and that a fear of ‘getting it wrong’ can make some reluctant to promote the wonderful facilities and services they have to offer.
